Roatan Info
Roatan is the largest of 3 islands known as The Bay Islands. Locals will tell you they are from The Bay islands and often talk as if mainland Honduras is a foreign country. More than ½ of the people speak English. Roatan is approximately 36 miles long and 3 miles wide. It sits at the Southern most point of the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world. The extensive reef system offers the most spectacular diving, snorkeling and fishing in the Caribbean. The island is mountainous, tropical, and sparsely populated except in towns. There are approximately 60,000 people living on the island. Almost everyone is friendly and helpful. The ancestral origins are unique, as you will find touches of several cultures: English, Spanish, Payan Indian, Garifuna, Honduran and North American.

Cottage Location Info
The cottage is located on the beach halfway between West End and West Bay Beach. West End is also where you will find most of the restaurants, the gift shops, grocery stores and night life. West Bay is where you will find the majority of people on the beach and where the more expensive hotels are. West Bay is also where the reef is the closest to the shore and makes for easier snorkeling for the inexperienced swimmer. In front of our cottage the reef is out further, as is the snorkeling and is recommended for the more experienced individuals. The ocean in front of the cottage is almost always calm with little or no current for easy pleasant swimming. The cottage is approximately a 12 minute walk from either West End or West Bay. The boat taxi will take you to either in less than a 4 minute ride for $2.00. We think our location is perfect as you are away from the hustle and bustle, yet you are close to everything but just far enough away from noisy tourist stuff. The cottage is quiet and relaxing. For $378 weekly or $810 monthly, 25% higher on Holiday weeks. We do not think there is anything nearly as nice as our cottage. The electricity is the same as the US, so you would not need adapters.

How to Get to Roatan
There are direct flights available to Roatan: Delta flies on Saturday from Atlanta directly to Roatan. Continental flies Saturday and Thursday from Houston and Miami directly to Roatan. Taca flies on Saturday from Houston directly to Roatan. Taca’s Telephone is #800 400-8222 Taca flies on Sunday from Miami directly to Roatan. If you want to fly direct, you can return on the same day any number of weeks later. You can also fly on week days. Those flights will generally route you through San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa on the mainland of Honduras. American Airlines and Air Costa Rica also fly into Honduras. We prefer the direct flight to Roatan.

Getting Around the Island
Car rentals are available. They drive on the same side of the road as we do. You will need a current driver’s license and a credit card. We are able to book and reserve a rental car for you, ask about cars. All wheel or 4- wheel drive vehicles are commonly used. There are also lots of inexpensive taxi's on the island. There are also boat (water) taxi's. The water taxi's are fun, and costs about $2.00 per person from West end to West Bay.

Currency
US Dollars are always accepted. The Honduran Lempira is their currency. The exchange rate is 18.5-18.9 for every US dollar. If you use Lempiras, you will typically get a better price. Traveler’s checks are generally not accepted. Visa and MC are widely accepted, but some restaurants only take cash.

Places to Eat
There are many (20-30) very good places to eat, most are inexpensive. We like Foster’s on West Bay Beach, approximately a 12 minute walk from the cottage. We also like Eagle Ray’s, Half Moon Bay and the Lighthouse Restaurant in West End a 12 minute walk down the beach from the cottage. These restaurants are right over the water and open air. Lobster dinners are typically $12-$17, shrimp dinners $10-$12, fish & chicken are less. Tips should be given, same percentage as in US, based on service.

Things to Do
Scuba diving (We like Las Rocas Dive Shop as they will pick you up), swimming, beach volleyball, great snorkeling, deep sea fishing, salt water fly fishing, water skiing, parasailing, yachting, yellow submarine tour and glass bottom boats. Horseback riding (Keifito’s just down the beach towards West End, 5 minutes from the cottage, provides horses). Anthony’s Key has a dolphin show in an open bay. You can also swim with the dolphins. Great Fun!!

Gumbalimba Park
Is fantastic!! 4 minute walk on the beach towards West Bay. “A park where nature, history and adventure surround you”. The tour includes some of the pirate history of the island. There is a beautiful Botanical Garden, Bird Sanctuary with brightly colored parrots & macaws. Monkey Refuge with spider, howler and white face monkeys that are eager to play with you. There is also a fun zip line jungle canopy tour. The zip line covers approximately 1 mile from top to bottom. You go from the top of the mountain to the beach and drop about 1,000 feet. Estimated top speed of 45 mph. The park provides experienced guides on the zip line.

Weather, Clothing, and Bugs
The climate is warm, usually in the 80’s. The dress for the entire island is casual. You might want to bring a good pair of beach or aquatic shoes. Sometimes there are mosquitoes and sand flies, we use repellent and are not bothered. We use Ultrathon Insect Repellent (with Deet) sold at Walmart and other discount stores. Also used is Autan (without Deet), sold locally at made by Johnson & Johnson. Sometimes there are no bugs, mostly when there is a pleasant breeze.

Groceries
There are 3 small grocery stores in West End. You can buy almost everything you want in these stores. You will also find vendors selling from their trucks: fruits, vegetables & seafood. We have been eating these items for 8 years, we clean them & wash them the same as in the US & have never had any problems. You should not go to Roatan without trying the tree ripened fruit: pineapple, mango, papaya, small apple bananas (these are not the same as US bananas), lychees (ugly red but great), cantaloupes, green oranges, grapefruits and avocados. All are great and inexpensive. In Coxen Hole: Sun Supermarket is a larger grocery store, across from the municipal building. In Coxen Hole, next to the PetroSun Gas Station and the Pizza Inn, is a nice big grocery store called Supermercado Plaza Mar. In French Harbor, Eldon’s is the biggest grocery store on the island. We also shop at the smaller grocery stores in West End.

Language
Until very recently, English was the dominant language on the island. Many of the older people on the island only speak English. As Roatan has developed, more Spanish speakers have come to the island. Many people are bi-lingual & over ½ of the people on the island speak English well. People are friendly & always willing to help.

Safety
Honduras is a stable democracy. Roatan has a low crime rate. However, you should not leave the cottage unlocked nor should you leave passport, etc., out. Petty crime is largely a result of poverty. We read more about violent crimes in the USA, than in Roatan. We have never had any problems. There are tourist police who regularly patrol the tourist areas including the beach. You may see them sitting in the palapa/dock next to our cottage. Honduras is very interested in your having a pleasant experience while visiting the country.

Directions to the Cottage
Take road to West End and then turn towards West Bay Beach, head towards West Bay Beach until you get to the Keifitos Plantation turn right then immediately left and follow the road down to the beach. The Cinnamon beach cottage is the fourth house on the beach (turquoise home, brown home, yellow home, and our home) and the Cinnamon Cottage is located directly behind this house. You can arrive by rental car. Taxi’s can also take you to the cottage from the airport for approx. $20 Or you can take a taxi to West End for approx. $15 and a water taxi (boat) for approx. $2 from West End to the dock next to the cottage.
